About me

My name is Erik.

Amsterdam and Sofia are my base locations nowadays. I had (and still have but different) a workaholic career in ICT but after a quite serious accident (click here to read more), I decided that working hard till (early) retirement was not the way I wanted to live my life. I did go on holidays before, both adventurous (e.g. motorcycle trip through the Balkans 6 months after the collapse of communism) and far (e.g. 5 week to Indonesia). After my accident, I started to travel and explore the world. When I work I give it all that I have but I also take time to travel between assignments. Maybe you can call it temporary, in between, retirement.

This way, I have retirement-time while I can still travel with a bag pack and I will have no trouble to work till I am 68. Actually, a woman whom I met in a Hostel in Mexico many years ago (she must have been well in her sixties, lost her husband and decided to travel) inspired me.

When I started my last travel in 2013, I was a bit nervous: a 48 year old man backpacking. I would have judged somebody like me 30 years ago. But let me tell you: You are never too old to sling on a backpack and travel.

The reason that I started this blog was pressure from my friends. They told me I should share my trips and tips and maybe inspire somebody to travel… or help somebody too travel.

I also post some recipes because when you travel, you learn about local food and cook with limited resources. Yet, home cooked food can still be delicious!

Last but not least: English is not my mother tongue. So please, if you see any mistakes try to read past it of send me a comment so I can correct it.
